Take Me Out Tuesday - Nicole Saylor

I didn't recognize Nicolle Saylor when she came into the Cambridge store recently - which is just silly because I've seen her face on her fashion blog a million times!  I did, however, notice her fantastic outfit and immediately asked if she'd like to be featured here on our blog.  I'm so glad I asked because it was such fun to meet Nicolle in person!

Nicolle told us that the outfit she is wearing would be perfect for a Tuesday night out eating Japanese with her husband in Brookline.

Want to know about Nicolle Saylor?  Check out her blog at  You'll love her daily outfit posts - especially the most recent ones of her in Brazil.

Take Me Out Tuesday - Lydia

Lydia Teffera visited us from Richmond, Virginia recently and modeled this dress as her Take Me Out Tuesday outfit.  When I asked her where she'd be going her response was, "In this dress?  Straight to Hell, probably."  Too funny!

Lydia actually worked at a consignment store in Richmond called Rumors.  Check out their website at because they have an online boutique from men and women and some great vintage!

Lydia told us that the style in Richmond is way more trendy than Boston.  Sadly, we hear often hear that from people visiting from other parts of the country.  Any thoughts on that?

Considering Layers

The cold weather has finally reached Boston and it's definitely time to start adding a few extra layers when you get dressed in the morning.  But consider your bottom layer carefully, people!  Everyone's got the heat blasting and you never know when you might be shedding a coat and sweater.

This is how Emily Gelfman looked when she walked into our Cambridge store earlier this week....

Cute, professional - exactly how you'd expect a Grad Student at Brandeis to look.  But, then!  The sweater came off and suddenly, Emily's tee shirt transported back us back to her freshman year at a Catholic Jesuit high school in rural Indiana where she and her classmates rocked the cornfields by starting a 'diversity club'.  We heard a great story about the controversial rainbow logo wasn't even approved before the shirts went to print - gasp!

We've all been there.  You're sweating your fanny off because someone's blasting the heat in your office but you can't take your sweater off because you're wearing a skanky tank top that would surely get you fired or at least earn you a reputation as the office harlot.  Or you go to a friend's house and they ask you to please take your winter boots off before coming inside but you can't possibly because you have two different socks on and one of them is full of holes.

All I'm saying is, think ahead and really consider those bottom layers that you don't think anyone is going to see...and GO BREBEUF JESUIT UNITY CLUB!

Take Me Out Tuesday - Robyn

Robyn is a Grad Student nearby at Lesley University and recently found this cute Theory jacket and sexy pair of heels in our Cambridge store.  Casual, but cute - a perfect Tuesday night outfit for drinks with friends...or maybe a first date?  She's a pretty amazing woman and recently spent time volunteering as a teacher of English and Art in Ethiopia.  We love it!

Robyn has a blog called Not Just a Hat Rack.  Check it out HERE!

Give, Give, Give!

Raspberry Beret donates any clothing that does not sell during a consignor's 60 day contract to a great organization called Mass Appeal.  Mass Appeal gives our donated clothing to girls coming out of abusive homes. These girls often leave their situations with absolutely nothing and the clothes and accessories from Raspberry Beret give them a fresh and stylish start to their new, healthier lives.

This year Karla, who runs the program, is also hosting a Christmas party at Cambridge Community television.  It is a multicultural party for families in need in our community.  It's called Christmas with Karla.  I will be there with my kids, who are adding video cameras and ipods to their Christmas lists and complaining the whole time. I would like them to experience the spirit of giving as well. When I told them about the party, they were actually excited to go help out!  It warms this working Mom's heart.

Karla also invited me to be on the show to talk about Raspberry Beret. Yikes me on TV- Maybe!  Please tune in to see the event.  And check the Mass Appeal website to find out ways you can help this great organization:

Upcycled Jeans

If you shop at either of our stores, you know that we have some great sales. Wakefield has the coveted $2 bin and Cambridge often has a $5 rack. Both of these sale spots are a great place to find treasures, especially if you're looking for things to upcycle.

What is upcycling? It's using ordinary objects to make something extraordinary. For example, these Diesel jeans that I used are great (REALLY great actually - I can't believe no one snatched them up when we had them in the store!) but I think they're even more fun now that they have an embroidered swallow on the thigh!

So, what I did was use a stencil and some fabric paint to make the bird. Then I embroidered around the edges with embroidery thread. Truth be told, it took much, much longer than I thought it would. There are a lot of little details in that bird design I chose. But it was worth it, I'm very happy with the way they came out.

There are tons of ways to upcycle clothing and changing buttons is probably one of the fastest and easiest. I found a great vintage sweater recently that I loved but it was a little boring. So I just switched the buttons out with some really cute ones that I found at Playtime in Arlington. Other options are adding lace and fancy trim to cuffs or hems, using bows on collars to create a playful feminine look. Craft stores are full of great supplies to upcycle clothing.

Need some inspiration?  Check out this blog post for by Hue and Hum for a cool tutorial.  Try it! We'd love to see what you come up with!

My upcycled jeans are Diesel, size 27 and they're on consignment at the Cambridge store for $60.

Take Me Out Tuesday - Vlada

Vlada Brofman looked like Cinderella when she tried on this vintage Jessica McClintock dress at the Cambridge store over the weekend.  Look at how beautiful the back is!

One would think that pulling off this look on a Tuesday would be a bit challenging, but Vlada sings in a band called NoMad Dreams and she's planning to wear it at an upcoming performance.  After that, she'll be wearing it to a Christmas party!

Click HERE to check out NoMad Dreams and keep an out for more pictures of this dress.  Vlada promised to send us some.

Fish net stockings: not just for hookers

I am here to praise effects of nude fishnet stockings.
They cover up all those scars from my tomboy phase, as well as the varicose vein from my childbearing phase. They also help out when you don't have a tan.
They go with everything and just leave your legs looking sexy. I have a few pairs and I buy them from our Raspberry Beret neighbor Cambridge clogs

The nice thing about the nude ones is that you don't really notice that they are fishnets until you look closely so you are less likely to get propostioned on your way to work. What you do in your fishnets after work is up to you!

Handmade Hats by Kara Lynn

Looking for the perfect winter hat for yourself or to give as a gift? We've got them! Kara Lynn, who works in the Cambridge store on Sundays, just brought in a few of her handmade ear flap hats and they're really cute and extremely well made. They're all lined with either faux fur or sherpa to keep you feeling warm and cozy. The ear flaps can also be buttoned up, which is especially cool. We've only got a few of these hats, so don't miss your chance to grab one! They're $40 each at the Cambridge store.

Style Tip: Start With Your Shoes

There is nothing worse than putting together a perfect outfit and realizing you don't have shoes that match or the heels that do match will be killing you in an hour.

I always consider three things:
  1. What am I doing today and how long will I be on my feet. Today I will be working all day in the Cambridge store on my feet helping customers. From work, I am going out to dinner and drinks. So I will be in my footwear for at least twelve hours, maybe more. This calls for two pairs of shoes. I will start with flats then change to heels, and probably back again! Which reminds me, if you don't already do this, always keep a pair of small simple black flats in your bag, car, or at work to change into if your feet hurt. Because walking through town barefoot is never okay. Unless you are a marathon runner-even then Vibrums please.
  2. The second consideration is weather. Check the forecast for rain snow etc.
  3. Style. I am a big fan of the bright colored pumps and flats. I have a pair of bright blue pumps that I wear alot. They punch up everything from gray jeans to an orange dress. My yellow flats have the same effect. Combat boots are great too. I am so happy to see all the great combat boots out right now. They are thinner and more feminine than the army boots I used to wear back in the day, and they look great with everything from dresses to skinny jeans. They are comfortable too. They are a perfect option for a day when you will be on your feet all day. And on a date, because yes men like heels because they are hot. But the best dates are spent walking/partying through the city for hours not once thinking about your feet. What it comes down to is: sore feet can make you grouchy, and no matter how slamming that outfit is, you won't look cute when you're whining about your feet.

Small Business Saturday

Today is Small Business Saturday - an event that was created by American Express to promote the support of local businesses during the busiest shopping weekend of the year. The irony in all this? Many small businesses don't accept American Express cards. They simply can't because the fees are too high.

We absolutely LOVE the idea of a special shopping day devoted to supporting local, small and independent businesses. In fact, we think it should happen year-round! Here are a couple of web articles that talk about why shopping at small businesses is a great idea:

Yes, it's really cool that when you use your American Express card at a registered small business today you'll get a one time $25 credit on your statement for the first $25 you spend. That's great for you - but if you really want to support the business you're visiting, make the rest of your purchases today in CASH.

TurningArt at Raspberry Beret

Hi everybody, it's Julie from the Cambridge store here. A lot of you ask about the artwork we have hanging in our store and I wanted to share some information about TurningArt with you.

TurningArt is a really cool art rotation service based here in Boston. NPR called it "Netflix for art." You sign up for a subscription and make a queue of the art you like. TurningArt will send you a custom made frame and then you can rotate prints of the artwork from your queue as often as you choose. The best part is that every dollar of your subscription is actually a credit. So when you fall in love with a print from your rotation you can use the credit to buy the original!

So, what do I love most about TurningArt - besides the fact that my husband created it? Well, it's a fantastic way to explore art and it makes owning original art accessible to everyone. The TurningArt website allows you to browse their work by categories such as style, artist, region, price and even color. So, even if you have no idea what you're interested in, they make it easy to narrow down. I also really love that this gives artists an entirely new way to share their work with the world.

TurningArt is running a special 20% off gift subscription promotion this weekend - you can give someone a gift subscription for only $24! - so now is the perfect time to take a look at their website and see what it's all about. Also, enjoy a peek at some of the pieces we have on our queue at Raspberry Beret!

Second Hand Pets

Meet Mambo. His owner Erika shops at Raspberry Beret in Cambridge pretty regularly so he visits quite a bit. We all love him, especially when he comes in wearing cute his cute little raincoat.

Erika adopted Mambo from The Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA. We wanted to give them, and Erika, a shout out because we think second hand shopping is always awesome - for clothing AND adorable little pups!

The Northeast Animal Shelter, established in 1976, is one of New England's largest nonprofit shelters that does not destroy any of the pets entrusted to its care. They have placed thousands of dogs and cats since they opened their doors.

Northeast Animal Shelter is located just a half hour north of Boston and easily accessible to all of New England. Being open 7 days a week makes the adoption of a pet convenient for the general public and enables them to place all their homeless dogs and cats. As soon as a dog or cat arrives at their facility, their staff begins searching for the perfect match -- a family who is just right and will give the pet a wonderful home. While waiting for a forever home, their dogs and cats receive the best of care.

Looking for a pet? Click HERE to learn more about Northeast Animal Shelter's adoption requirements and fees.

Take Me Out Tuesday

Raspberry Beret's owner, Rachael added a few things to the jeans that she already owns (but, of course, bought at one of our stores) to create today's Take Me Out Tuesday post.

Check out those amazing zebra print heels! They're by Steve Madden, size 7.5 and only $18.00. The blouse is Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati, Size M, $16.

What is Rachael's idea of a perfect Tuesday night out? A fabulous dinner, preferably sushi, followed by a nice long walk around the city and desert.

So, how far do you think that walk would last in those heels?

Vintage Modern

My favorite part of my wardrobe (and of Raspberry Beret) is that I have vintage and modern clothing that can work seamlessly together. I have always had a passion for finding vintage clothing and I thrive on the search for the ultimate find. I do not, however, want to look like I am directly copying a certain era or style. I am, as I get older especially, looking to incorporate quality, unique vintage pieces into my wardrobe to work with the modern, trendy pieces that I purchase. I do love classic silhouettes from many eras but I enjoy achieving that "look" with a modern feel.
So this outfit incorporates modern pieces, like the blouse and skirt with a couple of vintage finds like the 1980s  cardigan, the necklace and the suede 1980s belt. I love the color palette and the silhouette. Raspberry Beret is a perfect place to achieve such a look. You can find modern, trendy pieces as well as quality vintage.
